"There is always a place for her on our stage. Her superb songs have grown on all who have seen her and we need her back, soon." —Barry Everitt, The Borderline, London Emily Maguire is an English singer-songwriter who’s strong, thought-provoking lyrics and “the kind of vocals that will melt your stereo” [Scene Magazine] have won her fans across the globe. Combining “wisdom, hard-hitting social commentary and beautiful poetry” (Tsunami Magazine), Emily’s songs reflect her passion for beats, baselines and acoustic guitar. Originally destined to be a professional cellist, she taught herself guitar from Bob Marley songbooks and started writing songs instead. She gave up her flat in London for a shack in the Australian bush where she recorded and released her debut album ‘Stranger Place’ to critical acclaim by the Australian media including ‘Album of the Week’ on ABC Radio across 2 states. The first track on the album ‘The Real World’ secured her an invitation to perform at the 2005 Singer-Songwriter Festival at The Borderline in London, where she opened for David Bowie’s renowned bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and made such an impression that promoter Barry Everitt booked her for 2 more gigs on the spot. After she returned to Australia, he wrote on the venue website: “There is always a place for her on our stage. Her superb songs have grown on all who have seen her and we need her back soon.” Other supports followed including US bluesman Elliot Murphy, Aussie icons ‘Tex, Don & Charlie’ and current Aussie heartthrobs ‘The Beautiful Girls’. In May 2006 Emily returned to the UK again with her Aussie bass player and drummer for her first proper nationwide tour including a gig at the world-famous Cavern Club in Liverpool and a support at The Borderline for Texan band The Gourds. Emily is currently back in Australia recording a new album before she returns to the UK in January next year to perform in the 2007 Singer-Songwriter Festival at The Borderline. She’ll be doing some other UK gigs, including 2 shows supporting Hollywood star Steven Seagal, before heading to New York with her band to launch her new album and do her first US gigs in February 2007. Her website includes MP3 samples of all the tracks from her debut album ‘Stranger Place’, plus photos, a video for ‘The Real World’, gig guide and mailing list. |
